The following is a translation of a farewell letter from Farzad Kamangar, an imprisoned Kurdish teacher and journalist, to Ehsan Fattahian, a Kurdish Activist who was executed for muharabeh( enmity with God) in Iran on November 12th, 2009.

Translated by : Kamal Soleimani

One “enemy of God’s” farewell letter to another

"Each night, they make a star to fall on earth
And the melancholic sky is crammed with stars"

Salutations, comrade!

How can I picture you?

A slim young man on the gallows who smiles at the blossoming sun?

A barefooted kid from the exploited people of  a shantytown willing to be like bread on the empty tables of his people? Which crime can I associate you with?

Can I imagine you as one of the freedom lovers from the upper town?

From those whose lessons of life and school are nothing but pain and oppression?

Have I forgotten that our town lacks upper and lower parts?

It has been encircled with pain and oppression from every corner.

Oh, comrade! Tell me…

I want to imagine you as Siyamand’s in his wedding suit, welcoming the bride of freedom.

How?  How shall I imagine you?

Dressed as a young man, determined to follow Shaho’s path to reach a caravan heading towards the land of sun through a burned chestnut forest?

But none of these are crimes. However, I know that “belonging to this nation is bitter and running away from it is dishonorable.”

And

You said “No” to ignobility and to running away and you chose the gallows to remain upright.

Comrade, rest in peace…

Because the star’s death is followed by sunrise, and the expression of the gallows that dreams of death on our land every night is the birth of a child in the outskirts of Mount Zagros for disobedience and revolution.

Stranger and in peace rest  your head in the earth’s womb for tomorrow’s rebirth and re-growth.

In the absence of  mother’s lullaby,  sister’s farewell and  father tears, remain calm on the land that Abrahimes, Naders, and Kaumerthes have entrusted you with.

Comrade just tell me… tell me,

I want to hear what were you murmuring [on the gallows] when the sound of your feet was mixed with pain?

I want to learn which poem I shall recite?

Which anthem or song I shall sing?
Or
whose name I shall mummer for my knees to stay firm. ?

Tell me I want to learn, how to remain brave-hearted when I look behind…

   So long comrade!
