 CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Kurdish American Education Society (KAES), a non-profit cultural organization in Los Angles will be hosting the first North American Conference on the Kurdish Language and Culture on November 5, 2010. The event is co-sponsored by the UCLA G.E. von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies (CNES).  Our conference will bring to Los Angeles Kurdish and non-Kurdish linguists, students, and scholars from different parts of the United States, Canada, and Europe to address a wide spectrum of topics and research on Kurdish studies.  

The primary goal of the conference is to stress the need for reviewing the existing trends, current challenges, and new linguistic and socio-linguistic and historical studies, recognize the achievements that scholars and practitioners have made in their respective fields of research, and open new possibilities for raising consciousness about and change the state of the language and its community of speakers. 

 

Conference participants and presenters are from awide spectrum of disciplines, including but not limited to applied linguistics,dialectology, lexicography, sociolinguistics, anthropology, art and language, educationallinguistics, Kurdish as a heritage language, discourse analysis, and historical linguistics.

The Call for Papers welcomes timely submission ofabstracts for papers and posters to be presented at the event on Nov 5 inCollins Conference room at the UCLA James West Alumni Center. Some of theemerging conference topics include: The Influence of Kurdish on the Neo-AramaicLanguage, Kurdish language policy and planning, language and identity,challenges of developing educational materials in Kurdish, music and culturalrights. The Conference Committee has already received a range of topicproposals and themes as listed below.

We urge all those interested in research about theoreticallinguistics, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, lexicography, educationallinguistics, language minorities, heritage languages, literacy, language andliterature, language and gender to join us in co-sponsoring and contributing tothe success of this conference. We will also use theconference as an occasion to honor and pay tribute to the memory of Dr.VeraSaeedpour who laid the foundation for scholarly and academic work on theKurdish life and culture.

Poetry, Prose, Poster

 

Contest

 

 

TheKurdish American Education Society (KAES) encourages the youth to learn aboutKurdish history and culture and to express their understanding artistically.Students and youth (age range of 9-25) are invited to create posters, poems,and essays about Kurdish life, present and past. KAES will offer prizes (to beannounced later) to those who produce the best poster, poem, and essay in acontest of creativity.

 

Entriesand poster themes are guided by any topic or image of the participants' ownchoices. All work should be submitted by October 25. A panel of judges willreview and assess all the submissions based on originality of expression andartistic creativity. Posters should reflect some aspect of Kurdish life inconcrete or abstract form. Entries will be evaluated on the basis oforiginality, visual effectiveness and theme. Awards will be distributed on theday of the conference. All poster submissions should be sent to Zuhdi Sardar and creative writing to Amir Sharifi,

The Kurdish American EducationSociety1 in Los Angeleswill be hosting the first North American Conference on the Kurdish Language andCulture on November 5  of 2010.

TheConference will bring to Los Angeles Kurdish and non-Kurdish linguists andscholars from different parts of the UnitedStates and Canada to address a wide spectrumof topics and research on Kurdish linguistic studies. Our guests and scholarswill present their latest findings on a variety of topics related to the statusand direction of the Kurdish language(s) We urge all those interested inresearch about theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics,lexicography, educational linguistics, language minorities, heritage languages,literacy, language and literature, language and gender to join us in sponsoringand contributing to the success of this conference. Information on lineregistration will be made available soon.

We wish to bring multiple disciplines and voices together in thisconference. We welcome proposals and papers on the following topics: Kurdish languageand dialects, Kurdish sociolinguistics, Kurdish as a heritage language,language discrimination, historical linguistics, language and identity, Kurdishscripts and standardization. We will also use the conference as an occasion tohonor and pay tribute to the memory of Dr.Vera Saeedpour who laid thefoundation for scholarly and academic work on the Kurdish life and culture.

Unfortunately We do not have anyfunds to pay for the travel expenses of the speaker(s). We encourageparticipants to either seek institutional funding or independently pay fortheir travel expenses. Our members will be more than happy to provideaccommodations for our guests. Parking Information

 

Visitorparking at UCLA can be obtained by stopping at any of the 11 Parking & Information booths  conveniently located around the campus. Ourattendants will issue you a parking permit, direct you to an area where you maypark, and answer any questions you may have.

Thecurrent daily parking rate is $10 per vehicle and parking meters are availablefor shorter visits at 25 cents for each 8 min. (meters only accept quarters).At many events parking is sold at the entrances of specific parking structuresor areas. In this case, there will be clear signage directing you to the areayou may park. Also, some events make special parking arrangements for theirguests, so please check with the event sponsor for details.
