Exclusive; VOKRadio, Los Angeles

In observance and honor of International Women's Day/Month, Voice of Kurdish American Radio for Democracy, Peace, and Freedom, from the U.S, in collaboration with the organization World Women for Life (WWFL), conducted interviews with women identified writers from Kurdish decent. In this series, we learn about the lives and work of these talented writers, as they share with us the inspiration behind their work and contribute their insightful wisdom on working as Kurdish writers in today's world. In these interviews, we learn about the writer's backgrounds, interests, their role models, motivations, the role of mother tongue and relationship to other languages, as well as their take on feminism in their writing, experiences of gender-based discrimination, and misogyny.

These writers work in diverse fields and span different genres of writing. Some are accomplished authors of novels, while others work in journalism, poetry, and non-fiction.

Please introduce yourself the way you would like to be introduced to our audience but with a specific focus on your interests in writing.

My name is Hanna Jaff Bosdet-a philanthropist, human rights activist, conference speaker and author. I have also authored three self-taught English books. I founded the Jaff Foundation for Education with the purpose to teach English through my self-taught English books. Till today, we have donated more than 25,000 English learning books to refugee camps and orphanages in India and Iraq.

Please introduce your book/books or any published work that you may have. What are they about, whose voices do you center in your work? Who are the heroes of your books, and how do these related to your personal life?

I have authored three self-taught English books; English manual for Spanish speakers, English manual for Kurdish speakers, and English and Spanish manual for Purépecha speakers. They are related to my life because knowing English has helped me compete with others in fulfilling my goals, and having an advantage in my career choices.

Who are your role models? Who motivated you? Who has supported you while you were writing and continue to write your book(s)?

I have many role models, but one of them is Nelson Mandela. He was a symbol of peace and justice. He stood up for what he believed in, putting an end to inequalities, intolerance and racism. The two people, who have always supported me throughout my journey, are my parents.

How familiar are you with your mother tongue? How has this helped and/or hindered your ability to express your thoughts?

Spanish is my mother tongue and I speak it fluently. My father is Kurdish. I grew up in the USA. Throughout my life, I have lived among three cultures, languages, religions, ways of life, and so on. It has helped me become the woman I am today; the more you see, the more you have to compare to, and the more understanding you are toward others.

How does your Kurdish background appear in your writing? Are the labels of being Kurdish helpful or obstacles?

Yes, I live my three cultures everyday. My three books for learning English are for Spanish and Kurdish speakers.

How much has feminism impacted your writing? Do you consider yourself a writer for women/about women?

I am a person, who will always defend human rights. Human rights are women's rights. My books are for people of all ages, gender, or nationality.

As a female identified writer, what kinds of gender-based problem/issues/obstacle have you faced?

A sad reality for a successful woman is that she is always criticized, discredited, defamed, teased, excluded, or bullied by insecure others. The higher she progresses, the more the haters. I have been a victim of all of the above. People easily judge, but donot understand the obstacles and sacrifices one had to go through to get where she is. It takes a lot of strength to stay true and keep moving forward.

As a Kurdish woman writer, what kinds of minority-based problem, issues, or obstacle have you faced?

I have been betrayed, bullied, and disrespected numerous times based on my skin's color, origin, beliefs, or nationality. This is why education and awareness campaigns are so important to teach the younger generations, to prevent and eliminate.

Have you faced misogyny, racism from American institutions or society, or any other community you belong to?

Yes; age, gender, ethnicity, color, sexual orientation, religion, and social status are a few of the many ways in which people can be discriminated against.

I am presently conducting the ‘We Are One Campaign'-a non-discrimination campaign. It aims to promote tolerance and public awareness regarding and eliminating hatred among people.

What are your futures plans for your writing? and what message do you have for young people with similar backgrounds who want to become writers?

My book is now available in three languages. In future, I intend to make it available in more languages. So that, more people may benefit from it. A message for youths would be to stay in school; the work force is becoming increasingly competitive, and without minimum high school and college education, the opportunity for upward mobility would be slim.
