BAGHDAD, Aug. 3 -- Iraqi lawmakers on Sunday failed to settle a dispute over the oil-rich city of Kirkuk and pass a provincial elections bill viewed as vital for national reconciliation, despite intense pressure from the United States and the United Nations.

The earthquake, which struck at 11:42 a.m. local time (2:42 p.m. EDT), was measured at magnitude 5.8. It was centered about 30 miles east of Los Angeles near the community of Chino Hills, where it was felt strongly.

But witnesses reported feeling the shaking strongly in neighboring Orange County, as far south as San Diego and as far east as Las Vegas. There were no reports of power outages.

Several small aftershocks were reported in the minutes after the quake


========================.  زمين لرزه پنج و هشت دهم ريشتری در ايالت کاليفرنيا

زمين لرزه اي شديد امروز مناطق جنوبي ايالت کاليفرنيا را لرزاند.

اين زمين لرزه در ساعت ١١:٤٢ صبح سه شنبه،٨ مرداد ماه ١٣٨٧ برابر ٢٩ جولاي ٢٠٠٨ به وقت محلي از لس آنجلس تا سن ديگو را تکان داد و ساکنان ايالت نوادا، و شهر لاس وگاس نيز اين زمين لرزه را احساس کردند.

اطلاعات اوليه از مرکز لرزه نگاري آمريکا حاکي است که شدت اين زمين لرزه پنج و هشت دهم ريشتر بوده است.

کانون اين زمين لرزه چهل و هفت کيلومتري ٣٠ مايلي جنوب شرقي مرکز شهر لس آنجلس نزديک منطقه چينو هيلز اعلام شده است .

 خسارات جزيي به ساحتمانها و ادارات و همچنين مراكز تجاري گزارش شده است. تاكنون خسارات جاني گزارش نشده است. مواردي از جراحات بدني در گزارش خبرنگاران حاضر در مناطق اسيب ديده امده است
