The Kurdistani Crescent

saman_shali_02.pngDr. Saman Shali

May 6, 2016

Every nation has the right to have a unified identity. Some have a unified identity under the umbrella of nationalism; others have it through religious solidarity; and still others have their solidarity as part of an economic block. For example, one understanding of the Arab unified identity is "United Arab nation", while the European Union has its identity under the umbrella of an economic union.

Most Islamic nations are divided between Sunnis and Shiites. A Sunni Crescent begins with Turkey and sweeps southward toward Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, encompassing the Gulf countries (the old Ottoman Empire). Turkey and Saudi Arabia usually compete to take the leadership of this crescent.

The 28th Anniversary Commemoration of the Kurdish Genocide (Halabja), San Diego- California

Please join the Kurdish Community Center of California for the annual memorial massacre in Halabja. The attacks mark the only time since the Holocaust that poison gas has been used to kill men, women and children.

Late in the morning of March 16, 1988, the Iraqi army began bombing the Kurdish town of Halabja. An estimated 5,000 people died in Halabja from the lethal mix of mustard and Sarin gas, and VX nerve agent dropped on the town. Thousands more, as many as 15,000, have died, from long-term medical complications from the bombings, and the town has seen a huge spike in birth defects, cancer, infertility and miscarriages.

U.S. Department of State,

Press Releases: Daily Press Briefing on Kurds in Syria & Iraq

February 16, 2016

mark_toner_ussd_deputy_spokesperson.jpg

Some of the questions  in today's US Department of State Press Briefing:

 - Do U.S. A urges Turkey to stop targeting only the Kurds in Syria?

What exactly is the U.S. urging Turkey to do?

-The recent decision by the Kurdistan region’s President Barzani that the region is going to hold a referendum by November 2016. What is the U.S. Government position on that?

Mark C. Toner, Deputy Spokesperson

Daily Press Briefing
Washington, DC
  February 16, 2016

QUESTION: Syria/Turkey, may I please?

MR TONER: Yeah. Syria/Turkey --

QUESTION: Yes.

MR TONER: I’m sorry, go ahead.

QUESTION: Syria told the UN that Turkey hit Syrian army positions as well as Kurdish positions. Do you urge Turkey to stop targeting only the Kurds in Syria?

MR TONER: I’m sorry, one more time. You said Syrian – sorry, I apologize.

QUESTION: Syria told the UN that Turkey hit Syrian army positions as well as Kurdish positions in Syria.

MR TONER: Okay.

QUESTION: Do you urge Turkey to stop targeting only the Kurds in Syria?

MR TONER: I’m not aware of those allegations, frankly. I am aware, as you mentioned, reports that they have struck YPG-affiliated forces outside of Afrin and Azaz, and we have actually said – first of all, we’ve been very clear that these moves by the YPG on the ground, we believe, are counterproductive and undermine our collective efforts in northern Syria to defeat ISIL. And I’ve talked about this before; we believe the YPG is an effective group fighting Daesh or ISIL on the ground. I just would have to look into your actual question, which is – I was not aware that they had hit Syrian positions in and around Aleppo. You said Aleppo?

QUESTION: What exactly is the U.S. urging Turkey to do?

MR TONER: I’m sorry, within – well, first of all, look, Turkey is a member of the anti-Daesh or anti-ISIL coalition and a valued member of that. We have seen in the past week or so – and we’ve talked about it a lot in this briefing room – their concerns about the YPG. So at the same time, we have urged the YPG to avoid moves that will heighten tensions with Turkey and with other Arab opposition forces in northern Syria, because we believe they’re counterproductive. And I’ve talked about some of these, which is they’ve taken additional territory outside of Afrin; they’ve attacked areas close to Azaz, including the Menagh airbase. We have been clear to them in our communications with them that this – these moves we consider to be counterproductive to the overall effort to defeat ISIL. But at the same time, we’ve also urged Turkey to cease any – its artillery fire across the border.

QUESTION: And no matter what the target – so is it no matter what the target is? Is it just – are you urging Turkey to stop hitting --

MR TONER: We’ve urged Turkey to --

QUESTION: -- Kurds in Syria or --

MR TONER: We’ve urged Turkey to cease its artillery fire over the border (inaudible).

QUESTION: Altogether, no matter what the target is?

MR TONER: Well, look, as – against Daesh, of course, would be fine. Please.

QUESTION: Do you urge Turkey – the YPG on the ground to withdraw from the airbase?

MR TONER: To be --

QUESTION: Do you urge the YPG forces to withdraw from the airbase?

MR TONER: We’ve made it clear that we consider such moves to be counterproductive.

QUESTION: No, no. Avoid to it was something else, but they should withdraw from the airbase?

MR TONER: You’re talking about control from Menagh airbase.

URGENT CALL FOR ACTION and SOLIDARITY!

The Women Freedom Assembly in Turkey (Kadın Özgürlük Meclisi – KÖM)

 Dec. 22, 2015

End military curfew in Kurdish towns of Turkey

The war in Turkey is intensifying; people, all living beings and history is being destroyed!
As the State becomes more and more ISIS-like, the peoples’ resistance resembles Kobanê!

In the Kurdish towns/provinces of Hakkari, Dargeçit, Sur, Nusaybin, Silopi and Cizre, the State:

  • Has removed all doctors’ leaves and permissions, calling all medical equipment personnel to be prepared,
  • Has emptied out student dormitories, placing security forces within them instead of students,
  • Has swiftly removed teachers from places where it has declared or is planning to declare curfews and perpetrate massacres,
  • Is currently preventing entry into and exit from these districts by way of police and military forces,
  • Is continuing an endless dispatch of military equipment, ammunition, soldiers and police forces at the highest level possible to these areas. What this means is more killings, greater massacres, destruction and pain.

Since the 7th of June, indefinite and all day long curfews have been declared 52 times in the 17 districts of 6 different provinces, where 1.3 million people live.

IHD-TIHV-Report: Human right violations in Turkey in 2015 چاپ ارسال به دوست
vokradio, Los Angeles, California, USA

Severe human right violations by the Turkish state

We call all the democratic organizations and international foundations to stand against AKP and Erdogan's dictatorship and support the peoples resisting for democracy.

As long as peace for the Kurdish people is not ensured and an end is not put to Turkey's policies in Syria and Iraq, EU countries are facing a threat. ISIS, that is taking advantage of Turkey's approach in the Middle East, is bloodsheding in the EU. To stop ISIS, the support that Turkey is giving to ISIS needs to be halted and condemned.

The Human Rights Association (IHD) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV), published the 2015 human rights violation report that was prepared during the 10-17 December Week of Human Rights. Ozturk Turkdogan, the general president of IHD who disclosed the report declared "From the perspective of human rights there is a demand that needs to be met from Turkey. That is to urgently establish peace. When peace is not ensured the right to live is not protected, when the right to live is being abused it is impossible to speak of other human rights". Moreover Turkdogan, said that since there was no intervention in the human right violations conducted in 2015, the United Nations' system has collapsed.

The end of the Kurdish-Turkish Peace Process increased the violations

Severe cases of human right violations were experienced during 2015: In Diyarbakir (5 dead, tens injured) , in Suruc (33 dead, tens injured) and in the Ankara massacre (100 dead, hundreds injured). With the end of the Kurdish-Turkish Peace Process by the President of Turkey Recep T Erdogan, hundreds of people were shot in the streets by the law enforcement units, in the renewed conflicts. Tens of times civilians and the PKK were bombed on Iraq grounds. Curfew was declared in tens of Kurdish towns within Turkey. During the curfew period water and electric outages, lack of basic food supply was experienced. Medication and treatment to those injured by the attacks were not allowed by the police itself on the ground of the incident, whereas the dead could not be buried due to curfew prohibitions. During the blockade of towns and neighborhoods by the law enforcements units civilian youths, women, elderly and children were massacred. Journalists were arrested and freedom of press was violated. The refugees in Turkey are facing dramatic circumstances.
