September 10, 2016
Adnan Hassanpour, a well-known Kurdish journalist and editor of now-defunct Kurdish-Persian weekly Aso has been released after spending almost 10 years behind bars.
Adnan Hassanpour was arrested in 2006 on charges of moharebeh, fighting with God. He was initially charged with "espionage," "acting against national security," and "active armed resistance against the state" (Moharebeh). In July 2007, he was convicted and sentenced to death by Marivan Revolutionary Court.
Later, his sentence reduced to 15 years prison in exile. That conviction was overturned on appeal and he was retried on charges of working for outlawed parties and espionage, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

UAlbany online science courses for refugee Syria medical students

Updated 7:06 am, Wednesday, August 31, 2016

The imprisoned medical doctors, pioneers in the treatment of HIV and AIDS in repressive regimes, scrounged up old textbooks, organized classes and spread a feeling of optimism inside the notorious Evin prison in Tehran.

Despite shackles and bars, their minds remained unfettered.
Now, the Alaeis, who are the recipients of international humanitarian awards, are paying it forward. With the help of colleagues at UAlbany - where the brothers created the Global Institute for Health and Human Rights - they've developed an online program of science classes in Arabic for former medical students in war-torn Syria.

The courses are delivered over cellphones with a mobile app platform under development by UAlbany computer programmers.

US Will Continue to Back Kurdish Group Opposed by Turkey: Votel

US Will Continue to Back Kurdish Group Opposed by Turkey: Votel | Aug 31, 2016 |

The U.S. will continue to support Kurdish Syrian militia that Turkey has pledged to wipe out in its offensive into Syria, Army Gen. Joseph Votel said Tuesday.

"They have lived up to their commitment to us" to move east of the Euphrates River to meet one of Ankara's demands, said Votel, head of U.S. Central Command and the top U.S. commander in the Mideast, referring to the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG.

The YPG is the military wing of the Democratic Union Party, or PYD, which Turkey calls a terrorist organization. It's also considered to be by far the most effective rebel group operating in Syria against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.

Turkey appeared to dispute Votel's statement that the YPG had moved east of the Syrian border town of Jarablus, which Turkish tanks and mechanized infantry took against little resistance in its Aug. 24 offensive into Syria.

Turkey's Dangerous Game in Syria Threatens Entire Middle East

Turkey's Dangerous Game in Syria Threatens Entire Middle East
August 28, 2016

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin met recently to open a new chapter in Turkish-Russian relations, normalizing heretofore strained ties between their countries. This tension began last year as a result of Turkey shooting down a Russian warplane that was violating Turkish airspace. This new chapter dramatically changes the entire scene of the Syrian conflict.

At the center of this new development lies Ankara’s deep-seated antagonism toward Kurds, both in Syria and at home. In order to preempt Kurdish plans to connect the three cantons of Afrin, Kobane, and Jazeera, Ankara has taken steps to normalize ties with Russia, Iran and Syria, and gain their support for a military intervention into northern Syria.

Washington and Ankara's tensions over Syrian Kurds

Washington has been remarkably successful in improving its coordination with Syrian Kurds to destroy ISIS, which is now the priority of Washington in the Syrian conflict. The international coalition led by the US has established a successful and effective partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). This force, led by the Kurdish YPG, includes the diverse peoples of the region of northern Syria, namely Arab, Assyrian, Armenian, Turkmen, and Circassian factions and large number of women protection units (YPJ).

In abandoning the Kurds, the US has betrayed its only ally in the war in Syria

In abandoning the Kurds, the US has betrayed its only ally in the war in Syria

America has chosen to placate Turkey rather than back Kurdish anti-Isis forces.

 By Michael Horowitz
August 25, 2016

It almost seems like someone took the US strategy, and turned it upside down. Five days ago, US jets were scrambled to protect Kurdish forces in their self-declared Northern Syria Federation from Assad's air force in the eastern city of Hasakah.

Today, in the aftermath of a limited Turkish intervention on Syrian soil, the US is demanding the Kurds leave the northern city of Manbij, which the Kurds fought and died to capture during the past two months - backed by US warplanes.

That these two events happened less than a week from another is astonishing, even in such an unpredictable and volatile environment as the Syrian civil war. That the US is letting down its only remaining ally in Syria, at a time when other powers, namely Russia and Iran, have acted aggressively to protect theirs, is damaging to the overall US position in the region.
